Revisiting a Traditional Mexican Favorite

When you run a restaurant in District Del Sol on St. Paul’s West Side, you better know how to make authentic, traditional Mexican favorites. Because your next door neighbor is probably cooking the real thing in her kitchen. Luckily, Boca Chica has been family owned and operated since 1947 and they just haven’t seen much point in changing the mostly Central Mexico recipes they brought with them.

The décor is another attempt to keep the genuine Mexican “flavor” of the place. The restaurant is filled with murals painted by Rigel from Merida Yucatan and each mural tells a traditional Mexican story about the history of the country. This is a place of Mexican pride. But let’s face it; it’s still a restaurant and we want to know about the menu.

The menu is available online but I’ll give you a few highlights right now. According to the manager, the menu is mostly traditional Mexican with a few Tex Mex items thrown in for variety. I like the fact that they have a lunch buffet. It features three home-style dishes, enchiladas, soup, salad and assorted other items for $8.75.

They also have entrees like Chile Relleno (one of my can’t miss favorites) for $7,75 and, of course, the always popular with the guys, Chimichanga for $6.25. And on Sundays, they have a brunch from 10am until 1:30pm. But what about dinner?

I was already intrigued by one of the salads: Ensalada de Nopales – Marinated cactus strips on a bed of lettuce, topped with onion, tomato, cilantro & Mexican cheese. I have an idea of what goes into preparing any dish with cactus. This is a must try. In the entrees, they have eight different types of enchiladas. All right around $12 bucks. Speaking of 12, they have 12 different Especialidades de la Casa. They also have Guisados, Bisteces and Pescado y Mariscos.

Entrée prices are reasonable, ranging from $11 to $13. They make a special point of mentioning their award winning margaritas and large selection of premium tequilas. They also do catering and have a Mariachi band every fourth Saturday of the month. Hours are Monday 11am – 9pm; T, W, Th 11am – 10pm; F & Sat 11am to 11pm and Sunday 10am
to 9pm.
