Force of Nature
That’s probably the best way to describe Supatra Johnson, owner of Supatra’s Thai Cuisine. Not only does she operate her restaurant in St. Paul, but she also teaches Thai cooking classes there and even has a book out called “Crying Tiger: Thai Recipes from the Heart” that is filled with recipes and information about local sources of Thai herbs and foods. Never underestimate a woman on a mission.
But, of course, what we’re here to talk about is her restaurant. Most of the recipes she uses are not necessarily what one expects to find in a Thai restaurant. Almost all of the recipes came from Supatra’s mother, some of which she had to call home to help remember. So the food really emphasizes fresh herbs and sometimes, very obscure vegetables that can actually have many different names depending on which part of Thailand you’re from.
Supatra’s offers a fascinating array of appetizers including three different egg rolls, and a spring roll for $4.95 each. The rest of the appetizers are either $5.95 or $6.95. She also offers six different soups in cup or bowl, mostly in the $5-6 dollar range. That is, except for the Siam Seafood Soup for $13.95, after which, you don’t need anything but dessert! The salads also entail a fascinating trip through the Thai countryside with eight different selections in the $6-7 dollar range.
Between the twenty different entrée’s, you are definitely going to find something you are unfamiliar with, no matter how big a Thai food officionado you think you are. And the most you’ll spend is $13.95. Supatra’s also carries various rice and noodle plates for a lighter fare. Desserts run $3.00 to $4.50. And I highly recommend the baked Thai Custard.
Supatra’s is located at 967 West 7th Street in St. Paul. Lunch specials 11am-2pm and beer and wine are available. They are open Monday –Thursday 11-9pm and Friday & Saturday 11am-10pm. Sunday - Closed! Supatra’s also wants you to know that they cater business meetings, special events and celebrations. Call (651) 222-5859 for details.
