11-04-05 Community Coffee HubWiktionary defines a hub as: A point where many routes meet and traffic is distributed, dispensed or diverted. Somehow, that seems to describe Golden Thymes Coffee Café better than calling it a coffee café. It is a neighborhood hub that is endeavoring to create community as much as be a part of the community. This was evident as I sat in the café, waiting for my appointment with owner Mychel Wright. I watched three different people come in, two for an early lunch and a delivery truck driver for a cup of coffee, and they all knew each other and the staff greeted them like old friends. And the older gentleman sitting in the corner playing himself at Chess, knew them all. When Mychel arrived, he and I moved into the conference room/ banquet center he opened next door for presentations, movies, community or business meetings, and book signings. He told me it was another facet of what he called, “community building.” Another aspect is the Insight radio news program broadcast from his café once a month, hosted by Al McFarlane. And everyone in the neighborhood knows about the Selby Avenue Jazz Festival hosted by Golden Thyme Coffee Café. While Mychel and I were talking, I started to smell smoke. When Mychel smelled it, he became concerned, excused himself and hopped back into the café. He was back a moment later with a sheepish grin. “We’ve started making Tortilla Soup as a new lunch offering and I haven’t gotten used to the smell of them grilling the totillas.” Let me testify first hand that their Tortilla Soup is hand-made. Their menu is fun with coffee drinks like the Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, and the Ella Fitzgerald. As far as eating goes, Mychel told me their most popular items are the Breakfast and Lunch Croissant Sandwiches. They also offer hot or cold Turkey, Beef, Ham, Tuna, or Vegetarian Sandwiches. And soup on a cold Minnesota winter day is a hot seller. Golden Thyme also caters boxed lunch functions or business meetings. They are open Monday thru Friday 6:30am to 6:00pm, Saturday from 8:00am until 4:00pm and Sunday from 9:00am until 2:00pm. Call (651) 645-1340 for more information. Story by Bob McClain |
